Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers

The Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program was established in 1989, providing support for the overall quality of life for single soldiers, and to help maintain and improve Soldier readiness. Its mission, ‘…to enhance, the morale and welfare of single Soldiers, increase retention, and sustain combat readiness.’ is mission is sustained by BOSS members coordinating activities and events focusing on three critical components of the program: well-being, community service, and recreation/leisure activities. Life Skills, the newest addition to the BOSS Program, provides opportunities for BOSS members to gain lifelong knowledge, a particular skill set, or certification.

Members participate in several exciting activities, enjoy various discounts and free passes to shows and sporting events, and are well-respected in the community – on post and off – for the many hours they devote to volunteering.

Fort Moore BOSS serves the single Soldier Community: active, guard, and reserve, single parents, and geographical bachelors of all branches of service and Foreign Service Members.

BOSS is an official Department of the Army (DA) program managed by the Installation Management Command (IMCOM), G9, Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation but executed at the Garrison level by Soldiers, for Soldiers.

Components of BOSS
  • Quality of Life/Well Being: This includes issues  Soldiers can directly or indirectly influence to enhance their morale, living environment, or personal growth and development.. Examples include problems in living quarters, parking, PX/commissary issues and concerns about utilities, such as telephone or cable service.
  • Community Service:  BOSS makes a difference by volunteering in community projects and events on and off the installation. Soldiers find this to be personally rewarding and builds connections  within the community, helping to foster a sense of identity. These events can help develop enduring partnerships with organizations across the installation and surrounding communities. All community service projects provide the opportunity to increase awareness about the BOSS program while demonstrating the outstanding character of BOSS Soldiers.
  • Recreation and Leisure: Fun activities are planned by the BOSS council working in conjunction with the FMWR Advisor and Garrison Command Team. These events are geared towards the desires of the single Soldiers on Fort Moore. Commonly, these work in conjunction with the development or use of specific skills, from cultural knowledge to physical activities such as fishing, skiing, surfing, paintball, rafting, and much more. Ideas for trips and events are planned and supported by BOSS Soldiers and coordinated through the BOSS advisor and president. They must receive military and civilian chain of command approval. Money raised through BOSS fundraisers often pays for a portion of expenses associated with activities.
What does BOSS do?

BOSS increases and sustains readiness through leadership and training opportunities, quality of life improvements, community outreach, personal development, and recreation and leisure opportunities.

Who can participate in BOSS?

Fort Moore BOSS serves the single Soldier community: active, guard, and reserve, single parents, and geographical bachelors of all branches of service and Foreign Service Members. In addition, all MWR-eligible patrons 18 and older may participate in BOSS-sponsored events.

What happens to the issues raised by BOSS?

Issues identified are first addressed at the lowest-level, promoting Soldiers’ abilities to use their voice to problem-solve with the appropriate command or garrison agency. . If an issue cannot be resolved, it is brought to the BOSS installation meeting for review and determination for the best course of action. This may be presenting directly to  the Garrison Command Team, who will determine the appropriate course of action or need for continued escalation.

What's the Soldier's role in BOSS?

Without Soldiers, there is no BOSS Program. Every company, battalion, regiment and brigade will have a primary and alternate representative on orders for this additional duty. This Soldier should be highly motivated with leadership potential and a willingness to work for his or her fellow Soldiers. In addition, every company in each major subordinate command group, will have a primary and alternate company representative. Representatives act as liaisons, passing information to the Soldier and relaying questions, comments and concerns from the Soldier to BOSS committee members and the chain of command.

BOSS Meetings

BOSS meetings are held the last Wednesday of the month at 1:00 p.m. at the Infantry Bar, Bldg. 2784, 7611 Sightseeing Road, Fort Moore GA 31905.
